Car rental group Europcar has announced the acquisition of its Irish franchisee, one of its biggest in terms of revenue.

Europcar Ireland has 19 locations for both cars and vans, of which five are in airports, with an average fleet of about 5,000 vehicles.

Europcar Ireland is expected to generate revenues of about €50m this year.

The deal also sees the Group buying Europcar Ireland's car-sharing service, GoCar.

Launched in 2012, GoCar operates a fleet of cars and vans throughout Dublin and Cork. It had around 150 vehicles as of May this year.

Colm Menton, CEO of Europcar Ireland, will remain on with the company after the deal.

Mr Menton said he believes the deal offers the company a strong competitive advantage to continue its growth in Ireland and increase its market share.
