The number of people switching banks remains low, according to new figures from the Central Bank.
Just 3,600 consumer current accounts were moved to different providers in the first half of the year – down 33% on the number that switched in the same period of 2015.
However in the vast majority of cases, the Central Bank said that the moves were completed within the ten day time frame prescribed by its Switching Code.
Overall the number of consumer current accounts in the country continued to fall in the first half of 2016, down 2.1% to 5.17 million.
The value of the current accounts rose again, however, up 11.6% in the year to €22.1 billion.
The number of current accounts in an unauthorised overdrawn position was also down, falling to just over 251,000 compared to 322,500 a year ago.
