US insurer MetLife is to create 200 jobs in Galway through the opening of a new global technology campus in the city.

The company has secured a city centre location for its new operation and will begin recruiting immediately.

It said Galway had competed with several other locations to secure the jobs and it described the announcement as demonstrating the strength of the Financial Tech sector in the city.

MetLife does not operate a consumer business here but it has had a presence in Ireland since 2006.

Around 300 people are already employed at its European Headquarters in Dublin.

The company says its new Technology Campus in Galway will support its global operations and customers around the world.

It expects to begin operations in the first half of 2017.

It is understood extensive work will be carried out at the Hynes Building in the centre of Galway before the company commences operations there.

Planning permission has been sought for extensive alterations to the building, including the addition of an additional storey on the existing premises.

MetLife has operations in nearly 50 countries and has described its expansion here as central to an effort to increase collaboration across its IT and customer support operations.
