The government may introduce an export guarantee scheme for vulnerable Irish businesses detrimentally affected by Brexit, the Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has told the Dáil.

"We are looking at the possibility of developing an export guarantee arrangement for vulnerable Irish businesses which we will be making an announcement on," he said.

The minister had been asked by Fianna Fáil finance spokesman Michael McGrath whether economic growth was slowing because of the Brexit vote. Minister Noonan said that even in the absence of the vote, the economy would be slowing down towards a more sustainable rate of growth.

He said growth in economic output or GDP of 3.25%-3.5% per year is the predicted sustainable growth rate.

He said there has been some reduction to business confidence due to uncertainty following the UK's vote to leave the European Union.
