The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has launched its draft strategy statement for 2017 - 2019

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has said it will look at its ownership and control policy and undertake a review.

The current policy, which has been in place since 2012, sets out the rules regarding the ownership and control of broadcasting services.

It is being used by the BAI to assess applications for broadcasting contracts.

The Authority today launched its draft strategy statement for 2017 - 2019.

Chairperson Pauric Travers said the BAI's ambition for 2019 is a broadcast media that offers a range of voices and opinions and that gives the public an excellent choice of services.

He also said that with the proliferation of social and online media there are significant challenges for the BAI as a broadcasting regulator in terms of relevance and adaptability.

The BAI is inviting submissions on the draft strategy from members of the public, broadcasters and other interested parties between now and December 1.
