Technical glitches hit Australian stock market

The Australian share market was hit by technical glitches that twice caused a suspension today before the main index closed flat on a shortened trading day.

The market opened more than 90 minutes late due to a fault that affected the management of individual shares.

The system crashed for a second time in mid-afternoon and was again put into "enquire" mode, during which no trades are accepted or cancelled.

Shortly before the scheduled close, the Australian Stock Exchange tweeted: "The ASX Equities Market will not be re-opening today 19/09. An update will be provided 20/09 prior to market open."
