5.7m cases of Jameson whiskey were sold around the world in the 12 months to June, according to full-year results from French drinks group Pernod Ricard, which owns Irish Distillers.

Jameson sales rose 12% in volume terms and 16% in value terms during the period, recording double- and triple-digit growth in 62 markets globally.

In the US market, Jameson accounted for 23% of total Pernod Ricard sales.

The iconic Irish whiskey brand has now seen 27 consecutive years of growth, with the company saying the latest strong performance was boosted by an ongoing innovation programme.

Pernod Ricard Chairman and CEO Jean-Christophe Coutures said Jameson has led “the global Irish whiskey renaissance”.

He added: “Here at home we’re proud to see our Irish whiskey sales growing due to a combination of increased tourism and also a growth in the cocktail market.

“Ireland’s emerging appreciation for cocktails is seeing our products mixed creatively by Ireland’s bartenders to serve up something new and different for consumers and we applaud this.”

Domestically, Irish Distillers saw a steady performance in the year to June for spirit sales, posting 3% growth in value terms.

Meanwhile, on-trade spirit sales saw growth of 2% in volume nationally, driven by city centre accounts across the country performing well.

Irish Distillers’ portfolio of Irish whiskeys performed well in the Irish market with market share of 83%.

Particularly strong performances were delivered by Jameson, which grew by 8% in value terms here and Redbreast, which grew by 34% - albeit from a smaller base.
