Revenue at Virgin Media rose by 2% to €100m in the last quarter, however, the firm’s customer numbers fell during the period.

Expansion of Virgin’s broadband network has resulted in 13,000 additional premises being serviced this year, while the company expects its presence in the mobile market to gather pace in the remainder of the year.

Virgin said it plans to launch a mobile handset range for the first time that will be coupled with free nationwide high-speed 4G services.

The number of Virgin’s mobile subscribers crept up during the quarter, rising from 10,500 at the end of March to 11,800 by the end of June.

However, Virgin reported its overall number of "customer relationships" – the number of customers who avail of at least one of its services – fell by 6,700 to 461,500.

The company recently acquired UTV Ireland – a deal which Virgin Media Ireland CEO Tony Hanway said was “another exciting development for Virgin Media and demonstrates our continued commitment to providing great content for Irish viewers.

“The proposed acquisition adds Ireland’s newest TV channel to our existing portfolio, which includes TV3, 3e and is subject to competition and regulatory approval by the relevant governing bodies,” he added.
