Airbus beat rival Boeing in the battle to record the most orders at Farnborough International Airshow.

Deals worth $35 billion (€31.6 billion) for 279 aircraft were secured by Airbus at the Hampshire event in the UK.

They comprise firm orders for 197 aircraft worth $26.3 billion (€23.7 billion) and commitments for 82 aircraft valued at $8.7 billion (€7.85 billion).

Chief Operating Officer at Airbus John Leahy said: "Our orders this week at Farnborough confirm a buoyant industry in which we have once again surpassed our competitor.

"In addition, airlines upsizing to the A321neo shows that this aircraft is the undisputed middle-of-the-market champion."

Virgin Atlantic president Sir Richard Branson visited the air show to announce a $4.4 billion (#€3.97 billion) order for 12 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.

US plane-maker Boeing, which is celebrating its centennial today, announced orders and commitments for 182 commercial aircraft, valued at $26.8 billion (€24.2 billion) at list prices.

Its customers included the world's largest tourism group, Tui, which finalised an order for 10 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and one 787-9 Dreamliner.

The deal was valued at $1.4 billion (€1.26 billion).

Tui Group, which owns the Thomson and First Choice brands, now has three unfilled orders for 787-9s and 70 for the 737 MAX.

The British government confirmed orders for Boeing defence equipment, including nine P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and 50 Apache AH-64E attack helicopters, as the firm committed to doubling its UK workforce.

Boeing Chairman Dennis Muilenburg said: "Throughout the show, we demonstrated and discussed our innovative and cost effective products and services and the tremendous value they provide our commercial and defence customers.

"The British Government announced significant orders for Boeing defence equipment. At the same time we committed to doubling Boeing presence in the UK in line with the Government's prosperity agenda and our global growth strategy for our second century.

"On the commercial side of the business, we were pleased at the confidence our customers displayed in our portfolio of airplanes and services with significant orders and other announcements."
