The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.8% for May and June, however, the jobless figure last month was 1.6% lower when compared with the same period in 2015.

According to the figures from the Central Statistics Office, 169,100 people were unemployed in June, representing a fractional fall of 500 on the May numbers.

The annual fall to the end of June this year was 34,600.

The seasonally adjusted number of men unemployed last month was 107,800.

This is a decrease of 1,100 when compared to the May 2016 figure of 108,900.

In June 2016 the seasonally adjusted number of women unemployed was 61,300, an increase of 700 when compared to May a year ago.

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate (people aged 15-24) was 15.3% in June – a slight increase from 15.1% in May.

Commenting on the figures, Alan McQuaid from Merrion Economics said: "Although emigration has been a factor to some degree in keeping unemployment down, the labour market has improved dramatically over the past few years, reflecting the strengthening of the economic recovery.

"Employment rose in 12 of the 14 economic sectors on an annual basis and fell in the other two in the first quarter of 2016.

"The greatest rates of increase were posted in the Administrative and support service activities (+9.9% or 6,100) andConstruction (+7.8% or 9,500) sectors.

"The pick-up in the latter is particularly encouraging given that it was the building industry that suffered the worst in the downturn," Mr McQuaid added.
