10,125 new private cars were licensed for the first time in Ireland last month, representing a rise of 12.2% for the same month in 2015.

Latest figures from the Central Statistics Office also show a total of 5,488 used (imported) private cars were licensed here – an increase of 46.4% on May last year.

In the first five months of 2016, 93,347 new private cars were licensed, a rise of 24.9% compared with the same period last year.

The number of used (imported) private cars licensed rose by 21.3% compared with the same period in 2015.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen (1,010) was the most popular make of new private cars licensed in May, followed by Opel (1,000), Ford (891), Hyundai (845) and Renault (792).

These five makes represented 44.8% of all new private cars licensed during the month.

Since January, seven out of every ten (70.3%) new private cars licensed were diesel fuelled, while 96.3% of new private cars licensed in the same period were in the A/B CO2 emissions bands.
