New figures show that half of the top 50 most chosen brands on the country's supermarkets are Irish brand names.

In its fourth yearly barometer of the most chosen brands, Kantar Worldpanel said that Avonmore topped the list for Irish brands, followed by Brennans Bread and Denny.

The Brand Footprint ranking looks at which brands are being bought by most Irish consumers, the most often.

It shows that Avonmore was chosen by 75.8% of the population on average 27.4 times a year. This means it was picked up from supermarket shelves 35 million times during the course of the year.

Brennans retains second place with its breads bought an average of 25 times a year and by 71.5% of households. Denny brands were bought 16.3 times a year by 76.7% of households.

Meanwhile, Jacob's was bought by 84.8% of Irish households, which was the highest penetration of any Irish brand in this year's ranking.

Overall, soft drinks giant Coca-Cola remained first place in the worldwide Brand Footprint ranking, followed by Colgate.

Kantar Worldpanel noted that only Knorr, Coca-Cola and Heinz appear in both the Irish and European top ten, with few home names having a presence outside of Ireland.

"Irish brands continue to represent a strong contingent in our shopping baskets and it's promising that they're succeeding in the same space as pan-European and global businesses," commented David Berry, director at Kantar Worldpanel.

He added that specific rankings show brands like Lyons, MiWadi and Killeen all performing better than their international counterparts.

The top 10 Irish brands - as revealed in the survey - were Avonmore, Brennans, Denny, Knorr, Jacob's, Muller, Birds Eye, Heinz, Batchelors and Coca-Cola.
