A new pilot by AIB will see it operate some banking facilities inside a supermarket.

As part of the scheme the bank will open a staffed outlet in Supervalu’s branch in Lucan, Co Dublin from July.

It will offer shoppers access to an ATM, a cash and cheque lodgement machine and advice and sales facilities.

The outlet will also operate seven days a week and open for extended hours during weekdays.

AIB said the in-store concept has already proven successful in other countries and its pilot will aim to see if such facilities are of any value to Irish shoppers.

It said Lucan was chosen for the scheme as it was a high density and high footfall area.

Supervalu said it looked forward to exploring the idea, which could allow it to tailor its store “to suit the local communities we serve”.
