Unemployment falls to 8.8% in February - CSO

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for February 2016 was 8.8%.

This is down from a rate of 8.9% in January, while it is also lower that the figure of 10% in February of last year. 

The CSO said the seasonally adjusted number of persons unemployed stood at 190,900 in February, down 2,000 when compared to the January figure or a decrease of 23,400 when compared to February 2015.

The jobless rate had hit a peak of 15.1% in early 2012. But it dropped to 10% a year ago and has been falling at a slower rate since, amid a broadening economic recovery.

Today's CSO figures show that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for men was 10.5% in February, down from 10.6% in January and from 11.5% in February of last year.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for women last month stood at 6.8%, unchanged from January and down from 8.2% in February 2015.

They also revealed that the seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate eased to 20.1% in February from 20.3% in January.
