The Golf Hotel in Ballybunion, Co Kerry has announced it is to close with immediate effect with the loss of around 80 full-time seasonal jobs.
The decision was taken last night, with the owners citing poor bookings for the coming season.
Prior to the closure, bookings for this summer were slightly above 20% of capacity, compared with around a 70% booking rate for the same period in 2015.
The hotel traditionally opens between the months of March and October.
The vast majority of the hotel's guests would have been Irish-based (70%), with the remainder coming from overseas.
Owner Michael Carr added that a lack of support from local and national tourism bodies contributed to the decision.
The Golf Hotel had been due to celebrate its 50th year in operation during the 2016 season.
The hotel contents are scheduled to be sold via public auction this Saturday, while Mr Carr said the building will not be sold.
