Total Produce has bought a 65% stake in Progressive Produce, headquartered in Los Angeles in the US, for an undisclosed sum.

Progressive Produce is a grower, packer and distributor of conventional and organic produce to the retail, wholesale and foodservice sectors in the US and Canada.

The US company was founded in 1967 and had sales of over $200m last year. It employs 214 people.

In a statement, Total Produce said expects the investment to be earnings enhancing from the date of closing.

It added that long term put and call options are in place for the remaining 35% of the company.

Total Produce chairman Carl McCann said the deal further broadens Total Produce's US operations and is in line with its strategy.

"We look forward to working with the excellent people in Progressive Produce as it continues to develop its very successful business expansion in future years," he added.
