Irish residents took 2.6 million domestic trips during the third quarter, an increase of 3.8% when compared to the same period in 2014.
The figures from the Central Statistics Office show that each trip had an average duration of 3.7 nights, resulting in more than 9.6 million bed nights.
Holidays accounted for well over half of all domestic trips, while more than a quarter (26.2%) were to visit friends or relatives.
Visitors who stayed in hotel accommodation accounted for 965,000 domestic trips between July and September, while those staying with family and friends accounted for 752,000 trips.
Total expenditure on domestic trips in the third quarter amounted to €623m.
Meanwhile, the CSO data also shows that more than 2.2 millio trips abroad were undertaken by Irish residents between July and September, an increase of 2.5% over the same period last year.
The average length of stay on outbound trips was 9.6 nights. Spain was the most popular destination in terms of number of trips (609,000), followed by the UK (557,000) and France (260,000).
Irish residents spent €2.1 billion on outbound trips in Q3, of which over €1.57 billion was spent on holidays.
