Virgin Media has appointed Tony Hanway as chief executive of its operations in Ireland.

Mr Hanway replaces Magnus Ternsjo, who has taken up a new role with the company in Hungary.

Tony has held a number of roles with Telefonica across Europe, including CEO of O2 in Ireland, Consumer Director of O2 in the Czech Republic and Chief Commercial Officer of O2 in Germany.

He has also worked at AOL Europe and he was chairman of the Irish Telecom and Internet Federation between 2013 and 2014.

Tony joins the company next Monday and after a short transition with Magnus Ternsjo, he will take up the role and join the Virgin Media executive committee from Monday November 2.

UPC Ireland became Virgin Media earlier this month and launched its first Mobile deal for consumers. Subject to regulatory approval, the company has also agreed to acquire TV3.
