New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the volume of output in building and construction increased by 5.5% in the second quarter of this year compared to the first quarter.

The CSO said this reflects increases of 25.6%, 14.6% and 3.1% respectively in the volume of civil engineering, residential building and non-residential building work. 

The figures also show that on an annual basis, the volume of output in building and construction increased by 7.2% in the second quarter of 2015.  

There was an increase of 8.5% in the value of production in the same three month period.

The annual increase reflects year-on-year increases of 44.5% and 7.6% respectively in residential building and non-residential building work. 

But the volume of output in civil engineering fell by 14% in the year to the second quarter.
