Only 220 of the 800 employees at New Ireland Assurance will receive lump sums averaging €10,000 as part of the resolution of a six year dispute over pay.

The Unite trade union confirmed that the settlement relates to the 220 staff members who were party to the claim made in 2009 when a pay increase paid to other Bank of Ireland group employees was withheld from New Ireland employees.

Those who took the claim at the time were Unite members, though some members chose not to be parties to the claim.

Other current employees only joined the bank more recently and would not have been parties to the claim.
