The newly created company behind Carphone Warehouse and Currys PC World has announced plans to launch up to 500 stores across the US under a tie-up with one of America's biggest telecoms firms.

Dixons Carphone's Connected World Services (CWS) arm has agreed a deal with Sprint to open and manage Sprint-branded stores selling phones and tablets.

Sprint is America's third largest mobile phone group

The joint venture will initially see the firms open around 20 stores across areas such as Chicago and Miami.

But if successful Dixons plans to invest up to $32m in a 50/50 joint venture with Sprint to roll out up to 500 outlets.

Andrew Harrison, Dixons Carphone deputy group chief executive and head of the Connected World Services division, said: "This is a very exciting venture for us, and is a significant step in growing our CWS business in the US".

"We bring specialist knowledge and skills to this partnership and will be looking to deliver innovation and outstanding customer service under the Sprint brand," he added.

Separately, Carphone Warehouse in Ireland is preparing to launch its new mobile network, which will be named iD.

The €30 million operation, due to launch later this summer, will have the same name as the company’s British equivalent.

The service will run on 3 Ireland’s network and will employ around 50 people.

It is targeting 6% of market share within its first five years of existence.

The company is also investing €6 million in a new data centre to power the new network.

iD says it will offer greater flexibility and more innovative plans than other operators, in an effort to try to tap into consumer demands and trends.

Its research found that over the next year, a third of bill-pay and a fifth of pre-pay customers intend switching operators.

iD’s parent, Dixons Carphone, currently employs 1,050 people here across 119 shops.
