Eircom expands high speed broadband access

1.9 million premises will have access to high speed broadband connectivity by 2020

A further 300,000 homes and businesses in rural Ireland are to get access to high speed broadband as a result of a decision by Eircom to extend its fibre network further.

The premises are in 1,070 community areas across every county in the Republic, including 300 which currently do not have access to high speed broadband.

They are largely ribbon style developments in places including such as Fybagh, Co Kerry, Blacksod, Co Mayo, Goleen, Co Cork, Maam, Co Galway and Ring in Co Waterford.

The expansion will bring to 1.9 million the number of premises with access to high speed connectivity through Eircom's network by 2020.

The speeds delivered to the 300,000 extra premises will be up to 1000 Mbps because the broadband will be delivered using Fibre to the Home (FTTH) technology.

The extension will reduce the cost of the Government's National Broadband Plan which intends to connect 700,000 premises in rural areas to high speed broadband by 2020.

"This is a critical development as we build a future proofed network using a best in class technology to deliver the highest broadband speeds to many rural communities right across Ireland," commented Eircom's CEO Richard Moat.
