More than 13,160 new cars were licensed in April, according to the Central Statistics Office, up 12% on the same month of last year.
It brings the number of cars registered in the first four months of the year to over 65,700, which is a 28.5% increase on the same period of 2014.
There was a fall in the number of private vehicles imported during the month, however, which was down 5.7% year-on-year at less than 4,000.
The number of imports in the first four months of the year was also lower when compared with the same period of last year.
During April Volkswagen was the most popular make of car, according to the CSO, with its cars making up 13.4% of all new registrations.
Ford vehicles accounted for 9.8% of licenses during the month, while Nissan made up a further 9%.
More than 70% of all cars licensed in the month were in the ‘A’ tax band, while the same proportion of new vehicles were diesel fuelled.
