Aer Lingus passenger numbers drop oiver 5% in April

Aer Lingus has reported a drop in passenger numbers for April but said its load factor for the month rose.

The total number of passengers carried by Aer Lingus last month - including those on its regional operations - fell by 5.2% to 923,000 from 974,000 the same time last year.

The airline's short haul traffic was down 5.5% to 710,000 from 751,000.

But its long haul passenger numbers increased by 1.8% to 113,000 in April from 111,000 in April of last year.

Its load factor - how many seats on each flight - rose to 78.2% from 75.8%.

The airline said its short haul load factor increased by 2.6 percentage points to 76.8%, while its long haul load factor rose by 2 percentage points to 79.9%.

Passenger numbers on its regional operations - operated by Stobart Air - fell by 10.7% to 100,000 from 112,00 the same time last year.

EasyJet passenger numbers rise

Meanwhile, UK low-fare airline EasyJet increased its passenger numbers last month despite having to axe more than 600 flights due to a French air traffic control strike. 

EasyJet carried just over six million passengers in April 2015 - a 3.8% rise on its April 2014 total. 

The airline carried more than 66.2 million passengers in the 12 months ending April 2015 - a 6.2% increase on the total for the 12 months ending April 2014.
