More than 23% of employees in Ireland were working part time last year, according to European statistics agency Eurostat.
Almost 29% of those – representing 6.7% of the country’s total workforce – classified themselves as under-employed, saying they would like to work more hours and were available to do so.
The majority of those who classified themselves as being under-employed were female, according to Eurostat.
Overall, Ireland’s part time employment rate is higher than the European Union average of 20.3%, though it is below Britain’s rate of 26.5%.
Bulgaria’s workforce had the lowest share of part time workers at 2.6% while Austria’s was the highest at 27.7%.
