Card transactions could beat cash for the first time this year

The value of debit card transactions could be greater than the amount withdrawn from ATMs for the first time this year.

According to the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland, the number of debit card payments increased by 13.4% during 2014.

That represents 386 million individual transactions, with a value of €19.9 billion.   

Last year €20.3 billion was withdrawn from ATMs, an average of €56m a day, a 0.5% fall from 2013.
