Number of trips to Ireland rose in the three months to February - CSO

More than 1.44m trips were made to Ireland between December 2014 and February of this year, according to the Central Statistics Office, up 10.3% on the same period 12 months ago.

Almost half of these trips - 692,200 - were made by residents of Britain, according to the figures.

This represents a 7.6% rise on the figure recorded in the three months to February 2014.

However the strongest growth came from residents of the rest of Europe, which was up 18.1% to 480,700.

Trips from residents of North America were also up, rising by 6.6% to 176,200.

There was a decline in the number of trips being made by residents of Oceania countries, down 6.3% to 37,300.

Trips from residents of other areas; including countries in Africa, Central and South America and Asia, was up 5.7% to 57,000.

During the same three month period, the number of overseas trips made by Irish residents was also higher - up 10.7% to more than 1.26m.
