The Irish Times is to introduce subscriptions for its digital service from next week.
The news outlet will adopt a metered paywall system, which will give readers free access to a number of articles per week, with a fee applying for access beyond this.
Users will be able to read ten articles per week on each device before they are asked to sign up to a subscription package, with prices starting at €12 per month.
Articles found through search engines and social media will not count towards the weekly quota.
The paywall model is similar to the one used by The New York Times and is designed to get regular readers to pay for access without blocking the casual audience.
