Grocery sales continued to grow in January, according to Kantar Worldpanel, following a strong Christmas period for supermarket retailers.

Sales were 1.2% higher in the 12 weeks to 1 February, according to the firm’s latest figures, representing an average €5 increase in grocery spend.

Discounters Aldi and Lidl continued to see the biggest growth in sales, with both firms’ market share also increasing.

Sales at Aldi were 11.5% higher by the start of February, with the German retailer boasting an 8% market share – up 0.7% year-on-year.

Lidl’s sales grew by 12.5%, meanwhile, with its market share rising 0.7 percentage points to 7.4%.

Amongst the traditional multiples, Dunnes was the main beneficiary of the increased spend in the sector during the three-month period, with sales value up 1.7%.

SuperValu’s sales were up slightly, while Tesco saw a 2.1% drop in the same timeframe.

In terms of market share, Tesco remains the largest grocer in Ireland with a 25.2% share – though SuperValu continues to be a close second with 24.9%.

Dunnes is third with 23.8% - though it is the only one of the three main retailers to see that figure grow in the past year.
