Economics professor Yanis Varoufakis has confirmed that he is to become Greece's next Finance Minister.

Appointing Varoufakis to the key finance portfolio is interpreted as a signal of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's intent to adopt a hardline against EU/IMF negotiators financing the country and roll back four years of tough economic policies.

After two years of waiting in the wings, Mr Tsipras and his Syriza party stormed to power in Sunday's snap election on a wave of revolt against austerity that has driven up poverty and pushed unemployment above 25%.

Varoufakis is expected to be formally appointed when Mr Tsipras unveils his cabinet later today.

His administration is expected to be smaller and more centralised than in the past, with several ministries merged.

The Greek stock market plunged over 5% after news of the appointment.
