Supermarkets enjoyed a 1.1% increase in sales over the Christmas period, according to figures from Kantar Worldpanel, as the sector benefitted from a slight improvement in consumer confidence.

Tesco remains the biggest grocer in Ireland, despite its sales falling by 2% in the three months to 4 January.

It currently has a 25.4% share of the market - down 0.8% year-on-year.

Supervalu, which saw its sales grow by 0.3% in the period, was close behind with 25% market share - though this was down slightly on last year.

Meanwhile, Dunnes Stores' share stood at 23.5% by 4 January - with sales falling slightly year-on-year.

As has been the case for some time now the biggest beneficiaries were discounters Aldi and Lidl, which both recorded double-digit sales growth over the 12 week period.

Lidl's sales were 15% higher year-on-year, with its market share growing to 7.4%.

Sales at Aldi were 12.2% higher, meanwhile, with its market share standing at 8%.

Other outlets - which would include retailers such as Centra, Spar and Boots - saw sales fall by 2.1% in the period with market share down to 10.8%.

Kantar said the latest sales figures showed customers had "relaxed the purse strings" over Christmas, with confectionery sales up 6% and soft drink sales enjoying growth of 2%.

"The battle for market share looks set to continue well into 2015.  With the top three retailers separated by the narrowest of margins, it really is all to play for in the coming months," said Georgieann Harrington, insight director at Kantar Wrldpanel.
