Overseas trips up at the expense of domestic travel

There were fewer domestic trips made by Irish residents during the third quarter than in the same period of last year, according to the Central Statistics Office.

Just over 2.5 million residents travelled within the country during the three month period, according to newly released data, down 1.9% year-on-year.

However the number of overseas trips was up – rising by 2.1% to 2.15 million.

This put the overall number of trips made by Irish residents during the quarter down slightly on the same period of 2013.

The majority (60%) of domestic trips during the three month period were classed as holidays, while a quarter saw people visiting family or friends.

Total expenditure on trips within Ireland stood at €587m.

The majority of foreign trips (64%) were also classed as holidays, with a further 21% used to visit friends or relatives.

Trips to Britain represented more than a quarter of the total, while Spain and France were also popular destinations.

Irish travellers spent close to €2bn on overseas visits during the quarter, according to the CSO,with nearly three quarters of that spend taken up by holiday-makers.
