The building materials group Saint-Gobain has opened a new construction skills academy in Dublin through which it hopes to train 25,000 new builders over the next five years.
The company says it wants to replace what it called the "lost generation" of construction workers who have left Ireland since the industry was hit by a savage recession in 2008.
Brian Dolan, the managing director of Saint-Gobain Building Materials Ireland, says that the new training centre represents the most significant investment in construction skills since 2008 and is a massive vote of confidence in the sector and in the country by Saint-Gobain. Mr Dolan said the company is trying to help replace the lost generation of Irish construction workers, who have either left the industry or actually left the country. He also says that building standards and regulation have improved greatly over the last few years and so people in the industry also need to upskill and improve their skills. The vast majority of the courses at the skills academy will be free. Mr Dolan says the company wants to teach people how to build "smart homes" which are energy efficient.

MORNING BRIEFS - The euro fell below one $1.24 on currency markets overnight as investors reacted to a pledge by the European Central Bank to provide further stimulus to help the ailing euro zone economy. ECB president Mario Draghi yesterday announced the bank's governing council had unanimously backed plans to inject €1 trillion, through euro zone banks into the economy. That will be done by way of asset purchases to provide cash to banks so that they can lend to consumers and businesses in exchange for less liquid assets on their balance sheets. The ECB will also be providing cheap loans to lenders, again with a view to that boosting credit availability within the euro area.

*** Disney's film studio doubled its quarterly profit thanks to "Guardians of the Galaxy". The film has been the top-grossing title in the US so far this year. This time last year Disney was nursing a $190m loss on mega-flop the Lone Ranger so, compared to the same quarter in 2013, it doubled film profits to $254m. That helped the magic kingdom's bottom line at a time when its biggest TV division - which includes sports network ESPN and its ABC broadcast unit - saw its profit dip slightly to $1.4 billion.
