Irish manufacturing industries produced 21.3% more goods in September this year compared to September 2013.
Compared to August 2014, the increase was 3.3%, new CSO figures show.
The 'modern' sector, or production by multi-nationals, saw a monthly fall of 0.5% in September, but was up 27.6% in the year.
Chemicals and pharmaceuticals recorded an annual increase of 36.9%. Basic pharmaceutical products and preparations saw an annual increase of 48%.
The 'traditional' or indigenous sector rose 0.6% in the month and was up 8.8% in the year, the sixth annual increase in a row. The production of meat products was 3.7% higher, and paper goods up by 7%.
A recent improvement in the UK economy and a recovery in sterling helped the 'traditional' sector.
But the production of dairy products was almost 15% lower, and animal feeds was nearly 14% lower.
In the first nine months of 2014, output was 19.3% higher on average than the same period last year, the CSO figures show.
