New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that wholesale prices on a monthly basis rose by 1.2% in September.

The CSO said that factory gate prices decreased by 0.6% in September compared to the same time last year. This compared to a fall of 2% in the year to August 2014.

The main factors contributing to the monthly changes were increases in computer, electronic and optical products, which rose by 2%. Other food products - including bread and confectionary - increased by 1.9% while basic pharmaceutical products grew by 1.8%.

Prices of dairy products fell by 1.2%, while meat and meat products decreased by 0.8% and grain milling and animal feeds eased by 0.3%.

The CSO noted that building and construction materials increased by 1.5% in the year to September. The biggest price increases were seen in sand and gravel (up 45.8%), hardwood (23.9%) and glass (9.1%).

However, the price of energy products fell  by 6.6% in the year since September 2013, while petroleum fuels decreased by 3.3%.
