There was a 3.4% rise in the number of trips taken by Irish residents during the second quarter of the year, according to the Central Statistics Office.

More than 3.6m trips were made during the three month period, with an almost even split between domestic and overseas travel.

There were 1.77m domestic trips during the quarter, up 5.2% on the same period of last year, while 1.84m outbound trips were also made – a 1.8% increase on Q2 2013.

More than half of all trips were classified as holidays, while more than a quarter (27.2%) were for the purpose of visiting friends or relatives.

Just over 8% of the quarterly figure was classified as business trips, according to the CSO.

Domestic travellers spent an average of 2.6 nights on each trip, which resulted in 4.6m bed nights during the quarter.

Total expenditure for the period was €337m – of which €194m was spent by those on holiday.

Meanwhile, those making overseas trips spent an average of 7.3 nights on each trip – resulting in 13.5m bed nights.

Almost 1.5bn was spent by Irish residents on overseas trips during the quarter, more than half of which was spent on holidays.
