Primark today opened its ninth store in the Netherlands, in the city of Venlo.

Today's new opening brings the total number of Primark stores to 280 across nine countries. The fashion chain is owned by Associated British Foods.

Primark, which trades as Penney's here, first entered the Dutch market over five years ago in December 2008 when it opened a store in Rotterdam.

The company plans to open three more stores in The Netherlands in 2014, in Arnhem, Rotterdam and The Hague.

It also plans to open another three stores in Germany (Stuttgart, Krefeld and Dresden) and one store in Belgium (Brussels) between now and the end of the year.

Earlier this year, Primark announced an expansion into the US with plans to open stores in the north east of the country. Primark will open in Boston's historic Burnham building, previously home to the city's famous Filene's Department Store.

The new store in Boston is due to open towards the end of next year.
