Today is E-day and businesses have been reminded that, from today, public sector bodies will stop sending cheques to and receiving cheques from businesses.

Small Medium Enterprises are still the biggest users of cheques in Ireland.

All enterprises are being asked to review the way they transact payments.

They are urged to look at cards and e-payments as more efficient alternatives.

Cheque usage is declining in Ireland but still 61m cheques will have been sent in the country this year, down from 69m last year.

The Central Bank's National Payments Plan targets savings of up to €1 billion a year for the Irish economy by businesses shifting to e-payments.
