The makers of Tullamore Dew whiskey have opened their new distillery in Co Offaly, which cost €35m to build.

The facility marks the first time the brand will be produced in Tullamore in 60 years and was built in response to the growing global demand for Irish whiskey.

Tullamore Dew is owned by William Grant & Sons, which also produces Glenfiddich whisky, Hendrick’s gin and a number of other spirits.

The company said the new distillery would be able to produce up to 1.5m cases of Tullamore Dew each year.

William Grant & Sons took control of Tullamore Dew as part of its €300m acquisition of C&C's spirits and liqueurs division in 2010.

It went on to sell a number of brands that were part of that deal - including Irish Mist, Frangelico and Carolans - to Gruppo Campari but retained the whiskey company.
