Twitter has confirmed for the first time that it is testing a "buy" button in some tweets that will allow a mobile user to buy directly from a tweet.

The micro-blogging site said it has partnered with online payment company, Stripe, founded by Limerick brothers Patrick and John Collison, to deliver the new service.

In a blog post, Twitter said a small percentage of US users will be able to see the "buy" button from today.

It said the number of users with access to the service would grow over time.

The company added that it had partnered with a number of companies, including Stripe, Fancy, Gumroad and Musictoday for the initial tests.

It claims that a purchase can be completed in just a few taps. "Users will get access to offers and merchandise they can't get anywhere else and can act on them right in the Twitter apps for Android and iOS," the company said.

Twitter is under pressure to find new ways to expand its user base and increase its revenue stream. In July, it reported better than expected user figures, with average monthly active users growing by 24% year on year to 271 million during the period from April to the end of June.

San Francisco-based startup Stripe, whose technology makes it easier for websites to accept payments, has been attracting significant attention in recent months after it raised $80m in Series C funding, valuing the fledgling business at $1.75 billion.
