Carphone Warehouse is to establish a mobile service next year as part of an agreement with network operator Three Ireland.

The telecoms retailer also said it would create 50 new jobs as part of the roll-out across areas including marketing, finance and IT.

Carphone Warehouse has had retail operations in Ireland since 1996 and now runs 91 stores across the country, employing more than 700 people.

It is the second company to sign a mobile virtual network operator agreement with Three, with cable company UPC announcing a similar plan recently.

The establishment of two new MVNOs was a condition of the European Commission’s approval of Three’s acquisition of O2 Ireland, and will see the two firms gain some capacity from the combined operator’s network to run their services.

Carphone Warehouse’s managing director Peter Scott said this new agreement was an “exciting new chapter” for the business.

The company said it would use its experience and knowledge as a telecoms retailer to provide a “value drive and customer-focused service”.
