Finance Minister Michael Noonan has revealed that tax revenues for April increased by 9% compared to the same month last year.

Income tax recepits rose by 6.5%.

The full Exchequer figures for last month are due to published tomorrow.

Speaking at the Fine Gael launch of the local election campaign, Mr Noonan said that in relation to elections, "'it always comes back to the economy - it underpins everything".

He also said that tax cuts for workers will be contained in the next two Budgets.

Meanwhile, the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has warned voters that "it is not the time to take a gamble on the unknown". He also said others were making unrealistic promises.
