An Irish produced app, which tells the story of a baby's development through the 40 weeks of pregnancy, has been nominated for an award at what is considered to be the Oscars of the web.
"Life in the Womb", built by The Science Picture Company, has been nominated in the best Mobile & Apps: Education & Reference award category at this year's Webby Awards.
Described as the internet's highest honor by the New York Times, the Webbys celebrate the best offerings on the web over the previous year. More than 11,000 entries were considered for this year's awards, from over 60 countries.
Developed in Dublin by The Science Picture Company, Life in the Womb uses illustrations, animations and interactive 3D features to show how a baby grows in the womb. The app was produced in collaboration with Redwind Software and in consultation with The National Maternity Hospital and UCD by a team of artists, programmers, doctors and writers.
Other companies nominated in the category include Disney Interactive and Scholastic Learning.
As a nominee, Life in the Womb is also eligible to win a Webby People's Voice Award, which is voted for online by fans across the globe.
From now until April 24, fans of the app can cast their votes at http://tinyurl.com/kg9csy6. The winners will be announced on April 29 , with the prizes awarded at a ceremony on May 19 in New York where speeches must be five words long.
Founded in 2008 by Eoin Winston and Michael Grant The Science Picture Company is located in Dublin 2. The company specialises in producing medical and scientific 3D illustrations and animations for medical device, bio-tech and pharmaceutical companies as well as third level institutions.
