Italy's competition authority has fined Ryanair €850,000 for what it said was insufficient transparency in its optional insurance offerings.

The body also fined British carrier EasyJet €200,000, citing the same reason.

It said that Ryanair had been given 30 days to respond about how it intended to make its optional flight cancellation insurance offers more consumer friendly.

The authority said EasyJet already had taken provisions.
