More than 9,000 jobs have been created by community-owned enterprise centres over the past ten years, according to a new report on the schemes.

A survey undertaken by the National Association of Community Enterprise Centres and Enterprise Ireland suggests that more than 3,700 of those jobs are still held today, the majority of which are in the private sector.

Enterprise Ireland said €61.4 million had been approved for the creation of community enterprise centres since the first scheme launched in 1989.

To date 120 schemes have been completed, with financial support approved for a further 14.

According to the survey, 392 new businesses have been started in community enterprise centres since 2010.
