Energy prices rose across the board last month, according to the latest Bord Gáis Energy Index, with electricity prices rising by 8% and the price of natural gas increasing by 6%.

Prices for oil and coal were up by 1%, meanwhile, putting the overall increase for the price of energy at 4%.

The arrival of colder weather is one factor in the rise, however some disruption to supply in Britain along with a strong pound also had a role.

The majority of electricity used in Ireland is generated by gas-powered stations that acquire fuel at British prices.

This make the price of both types of energy sensitive to changes in the natural gas industry in Britain.
