New figures from the Central Statistics Office suggest that the number of new private cars licensed for the first time decreased by 8% in November to 1,307 from 1,421 the same time last year.
The CSO said that a total of 70,709 new cars were licensed in the year to November, down 6.3% on the same time last year.
Today's figures show that the number of used (imported) private cars licensed for the first time rose by 29.4% to 4,486 last month.
Of the new cars licensed in November, 26.9% were petrol and 72% were diesel.
The most popular make of new cars licensed in November was Ford, followed by Volkswagen, Audi and Toyota.
