Irish residents took almost 1.81 million overseas trips between April and June of this year, according to the Central Statistics Office, down slightly on the same period of 2012.
However the amount spent on the trips was higher, rising by almost €47 million to just below €1.35 billion.
Nearly 59% of overseas trips taken between April and June were classified as holidays, while nearly a quarter were made up by people visiting family or friends.
Meanwhile the number of Irish residents taking domestic trips was up marginally in the three months to the end of June, standing at more than 1.68 million.
More than 47% of these trips were classified as holidays, while more than 36% were for the purpose of visiting friends or relations.
More than €298 million was spent on these trips during the second quarter – down more than €17 million on the same period of 2012.
Around 3.09 million overseas trips have been taken in the first half of 2013 according to the CSO figures, compared to 3.12 million in the first six months of last year.
The number of domestic trips in the first half of the year was 2.99 million – around 10,000 fewer than in the same period of 2012.
