AIB’s latest losses are the fifth biggest of any bank in the world, according to The Banker magazine’s latest Top 1,000 World Banks ranking.

The Irish bank’s most recent results showed a loss of $5.05 billion, according to the report, putting it below Royal Bank of Scotland’s $8.32 billion loss but above the $4.82 billion loss recorded by Italy’s Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

Spain’s Bankia topped the list of global bank losses, with a figure of $33.03 billion.

Spanish banks CatalunyaCaixa and NCG Banco were ranked second and third.

Meanwhile Industrial and Commercial Bank of China was named the best bank overall, making it the first Chinese bank to do so.

Last year’s winner, Bank of America, was pushed down to third place while JP Morgan Chase & Co remained second.

ICBC grew its capital and profits by 14% in the past year, according to The Banker’s editor Brian Caplen.

It is now the world’s best bank in terms of Tier 1 capital, profits assets, deposits and market capitalisation.

State-owned banks China Construction Bank Corporation, Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of China were the world’s second, third and fourth most profitable banks respectively.
