The EU's statistics office has said that an error in loading data from France meant that May unemployment figures for the EU and euro area were reported 0.1 percentage points lower than they should have been.

Eurostat said the unemployment figures it had released yesterday for the euro zone and EU should have been 12.2% and 11%, respectively, instead of 12.1% and 10.9%.

The statistics office blamed the error on problems loading data from France, whose May unemployment figure should have been 10.9%, 0.5 percentage points higher than previously reported.

The data error also caused Eurostat to revise its seasonally adjusted figures for earlier months of the year.
